XD38II
Sliding-Headstock Swiss Lathe

The Hanwha XD38II is the foundational heavy-duty sliding-headstock Swiss lathe in the Hanwha 38mm family. It offers the widest range of configuration options in the group, covering guide-bush (H), non-guide-bush (N), convertible (NH), and Hanwha Fanuc-i controller (He) variants. This breadth makes the XD38II a strong fit for shops with diverse job requirements that need a single platform they can configure differently for different work. Sub spindle motor selection is a key differentiator on the XD38II. Operators choose between a built-in motor (Fanuc 32i-B, 2.2/5.5 kW, 20/49 Nm) for maximum sub spindle power, or a cost-effective Hanwha Fanuc-i spindle motor (1.1/3.7 kW, 7/28 Nm) for applications where sub spindle demand is lighter. Both options run at 6,500 rpm. This choice lets buyers match the machine specification to the actual work -- and avoid paying for more sub spindle capacity than the job needs. The back tool unit scales from 4 to 8 positions, with driven tool counts adjustable from 2 up to 8. An off-centre drill unit (2 positions, ER16) provides eccentric drilling capability via a gear-drive at 6,500 rpm. The cross-drill section carries five tools (5 x ER16) with a 2.2 kW motor. On the OD side, five tools in 16mm square holders are standard. With axis counts reaching 7 in certain configurations, the XD38II can handle complex compound operations including turning, cross drilling, milling, back-side operations, and eccentric drilling in a single setup. AMT supplies and supports the XD38II throughout Canada.

Ideal For

  • Job shops wanting maximum configuration flexibility from a single 38mm Swiss platform
  • Operations with mixed work that sometimes needs strong sub spindle power and sometimes does not
  • Shops upgrading from an older Swiss lathe that want a well-proven, widely supported 38mm machine
  • Productions where back-tool scaling (4 to 8) lets one machine cover multiple part families
  • Canadian manufacturers seeking AMT-supported Hanwha Swiss lathes with on-the-ground application expertise
Key Features

XD38II Features

Standard features that set this machine apart in demanding manufacturing environments.

Precision & Performance

  • Sub spindle motor choice (built-in 2.2/5.5 kW vs. Hanwha Fanuc-i 1.1/3.7 kW) lets buyers match machine specification to actual sub spindle demand
  • Off-centre drill unit (2 positions, ER16) provides eccentric drilling via motor drive (NH/H/N configs) or gear drive (He config)
  • 5/6/7-axis capability -- when combined with cross drilling, back tooling, and off-centre drilling, the XD38II handles compound operations in a single chuck

Ease of Operation

  • Widest configuration range in the Hanwha 38mm family -- guide-bush, non-guide-bush, convertible, and Hanwha Fanuc-i variants address different production requirements
  • Modular back tool system supports interchangeable driven tool modules for flexible tool configurations without full reconfiguration
  • Common cross-drill ER16 modular tooling shared with XD38II-R and XD38III, protecting tooling investment across the platform family

Built-In Extras

  • Back tool unit scalable from 4 to 8 positions with driven count adjustable up to 8, enabling the tooling layout to match the part's secondary operation complexity

FAQ

XD38II Questions

Answers to common questions about the XD38II.

The XD38II is described as a 5/6/7-axis machine. The exact count depends on the configuration chosen: the NH convertible guide bush version with cross drilling, back tooling, and the off-centre drill unit reaches 7 axes.

The built-in motor (Fanuc 32i-B) delivers 2.2/5.5 kW and 20/49 Nm -- suited to heavier sub spindle cuts in tougher materials. The Hanwha Fanuc-i spindle motor option provides 1.1/3.7 kW and 7/28 Nm at a lower cost, and is a practical choice when sub spindle operations are lighter drilling or parting cycles. Both spin at 6,500 rpm.

The back tool unit is scalable. The standard NH configuration carries 6 tools (4 fixed + 2 driven), and the layout can be extended to 4, 5, 6, or 8 positions, with the driven count ranging up to 8. Note that the 5- and 6-tool configurations are not compatible with simultaneous off-centre drill use.
