Turret-Type Swiss Lathe

The Hanwha STL38 is a 9-axis, turret-type sliding-headstock lathe governed by the Siemens 840D controller and capable of machining bar stock up to 38 mm in diameter (Ø32 minimum noted in the capacity table). A 23 kW built-in main spindle spinning to 6,500 rpm gives the STL38 more top-end speed than its larger STL42 sibling while retaining the same three-path machining architecture: OD gang tools, a 10-station VDI 30 turret, and a Y3-axis back tool unit that handles rear-face and secondary operations without interrupting the main program. The STL38's cross drilling and milling unit runs four ER20M holders at 6,000 rpm (1.07 kW), and the standard back tool post carries eight ER20M tools (four fixed, four driven) at 1.07 kW. A modular upgrade lifts the back tool to eight positions driven through a Y3 feed axis. Combined gang, turret, and back tool capacity reaches up to 49 positions, giving programmers the flexibility to pre-load tools for multi-variant runs without hardware changes between jobs. The turret accepts VDI 30 holders as standard and BMT 45 as an option, and the same Siemens 840D platform used across the STL family provides balance-turning, OD-plus-turret, cross-plus-turret, and front-plus-back simultaneous cycles. AMT Machine Tools is the Canadian dealer for Hanwha, offering application support, on-site setup, and ongoing service for the STL38 throughout Ontario and Canada. The machine targets manufacturers producing mid-diameter precision parts — hydraulic connectors, aerospace fasteners, surgical components — where 38 mm capacity, high spindle speed, and a flexible turret configuration are the core requirements.

Ideal For

  • Shops requiring high spindle speed (6,500 rpm) for smaller-diameter features within a 38 mm envelope
  • High-complexity parts needing simultaneous OD turning, turret work, and driven back-tool operations
  • Manufacturers already using Siemens 840D and looking for a consistent control platform across machines
  • Job shops running frequent changeovers who benefit from up to 49 pre-loaded tool positions
  • Ontario and Canadian facilities seeking a turret-type Swiss lathe with full local dealer support from AMT

FAQ

STL38 Questions

Answers to common questions about the STL38.

The STL38 and STL42 share the same 9-axis Siemens 840D turret architecture but differ in bar capacity and spindle power. The STL38 handles up to 38 mm bar at 6,500 rpm with a 23 kW main spindle; the STL42 handles up to 42 mm bar at 6,000 rpm with a 22 kW main spindle and a larger cross drilling unit (5 tools at 2.59 kW vs. 4 tools at 1.07 kW on the STL38).

The STL38 runs on the Siemens 840D, the same high-end CNC platform used on the STL42. It provides 9-axis simultaneous control with Hanwha's updated HMI, tool measuring, and software-based collision protection.

The STL38 supports up to 49 combined gang, turret, and back tool positions. The 10-station VDI 30 turret alone holds a maximum of 30 tools; the Y3-axis modular back tool unit adds up to 8 driven positions.
