Turret-Type Swiss Lathe

The Hanwha STL42 is a 9-axis, turret-type sliding-headstock CNC lathe built around the Siemens 840D controller and engineered to handle bar stock up to 42 mm in diameter. Introduced in 2020 as Hanwha's flagship high-complexity platform, the STL42 pairs a powerful 22 kW built-in main spindle motor with hydraulic chucking for a firm, consistent grip on difficult materials. The machine runs three tool-path groups simultaneously — OD gang tools, a 10-station VDI 30 turret (optionally BMT 45), and a back tool unit with Y3-axis feed — making it practical for parts that require heavy turning, driven cross-work, and back-end finishing in a single cycle. Tool capacity reaches up to 49 positions when the full complement of gang, turret, and back tool holders is fitted. The turret unit uses SRG roller-retainer LM guides to maintain stiffness during indexing. The cross drilling and milling unit on the STL42 carries five ER20 holders driven at 6,000 rpm by a 2.59 kW motor — a meaningful step up from the STL38's four-tool, 1.07 kW arrangement — and the back tool unit supports nine ER20 tools (three fixed, six driven) at 2.13 kW, with an optional cross unit that adds three more cross positions alongside the six back tools. Siemens 840D delivers the control horsepower to coordinate all three paths, with a refreshed HMI and built-in collision protection. AMT Machine Tools supplies and supports the STL42 across Ontario and Canada, providing application engineering, tooling setup, and Hanwha-factory-backed service. The machine is well suited to aerospace fasteners, hydraulic fittings, medical implant components, and any high-mix job where rapid tool access and multi-path overlap are the key to cycle time.

Ideal For

  • High-complexity parts requiring simultaneous OD turning, driven cross-work, and back-end finishing
  • Job shops running frequent changeovers across a wide variety of part geometries
  • Manufacturers stepping up from 38 mm capacity who need a direct, higher-power path to 42 mm
  • Facilities where Siemens 840D programming expertise is already in house
  • Ontario and Canadian shops sourcing a full-service turret Swiss lathe with local dealer support
Key Features

FAQ

STL42 Questions

Answers to common questions about the STL42.

The STL42 accepts bar stock up to 42 mm in diameter. It runs with a BRA42 guide bush in guide-bush mode, or converts to non-guide-bush operation for shorter workpieces.

The STL42 uses the Siemens 840D CNC, the same platform found on the STL38. The 840D gives the machine its 9-axis simultaneous control and supports Hanwha's updated HMI with integrated tool measuring and collision protection.

With the full option configuration — gang tools, a 10-station turret, and the back tool unit — the STL42 can carry up to 49 tool positions. The turret alone holds a maximum of 30 tools (VDI 30 or optional BMT 45 holders).
