XD42
Sliding-Headstock Swiss Lathe

The Hanwha XD42 is a sliding-headstock Swiss-type CNC lathe built specifically for larger-diameter work up to Ø42mm. Where most Swiss machines top out around 32mm or 38mm, the XD42 extends that capacity without sacrificing rigidity. A built-in spindle motor paired with a hydraulic chucking cylinder and a three-toggle clamping system delivers the chucking force needed to hold larger-diameter stainless steel, titanium, and alloy bar stock securely throughout the cut. The machine runs on the Fanuc 0i-TF Plus control and ships in a convertible guide bush / non-guide bush (NH) configuration, giving shops the option to switch between full guide-bush support for long slender parts and non-guide-bush mode for shorter, larger-diameter workpieces where material yield is a priority. The XD42 offers 5- or 6-axis operation with main Cs and sub Cs spindle control, OD turning, cross drilling and milling, front tooling, and a Y2-axis back tool unit with eight positions for secondary operations on the sub spindle. Cross drilling and milling is handled by a gear-driven modular unit running at 6,000 rpm with a 2.2 kW motor and five tools (ER20 x 2, ER16 x 3). The back tool unit adds five ER20M tools (including three fixed and two driven) for back-side turning, threading, and drilling at 6,000 rpm. An optional off-centre drill unit (one position, ER20M, gear-driven modular type) expands eccentric drilling capability without a dedicated sub-axis. AMT supplies the XD42 across Canada with full application and tooling support.

Ideal For

  • Job shops machining Ø38--42 mm bar stock that outgrows standard 38 mm Swiss lathes
  • Shops producing high-complexity parts with cross-drilling, milling, and back-side operations in one setup
  • Production runs in stainless steel, titanium, or high-alloy materials requiring strong chucking force
  • Operations wanting guide-bush / non-guide-bush flexibility on a single machine
  • Canadian manufacturers seeking a supported, full-capacity Swiss lathe from AMT
Key Features

XD42 Features

Standard features that set this machine apart in demanding manufacturing environments.

Precision & Performance

  • Built-in spindle motor (5.5 / 7.5 kW) delivers consistent power across a wide speed range up to 6,000 rpm
  • Gear-driven modular cross-drill unit (2.2 kW, 6,000 rpm) with selectable 4-tool or 5-tool back layouts for flexible secondary machining
  • Fanuc 0i-TF Plus controller with Cs spindle control on both main and sub spindles enables complex compound operations
  • Linear roller guides on the feed axes support high rigidity and consistent positional accuracy under heavy cuts

Machining Capability

  • Handles bar stock up to Ø42 mm -- one of the largest capacities in the Hanwha Swiss lathe line-up
  • Hydraulic chucking cylinder with three-toggle clamping system provides high grip force for stainless steel and alloy materials

Built-In Extras

  • Convertible guide bush / non-guide bush (NH) configuration allows shops to switch modes without major retooling

FAQ

XD42 Questions

Answers to common questions about the XD42.

The XD42 accommodates bar stock up to Ø42 mm, making it one of the largest-capacity sliding-headstock Swiss lathes in the Hanwha range. It uses a built-in motor with a hydraulic chucking cylinder and three-toggle system to maintain a firm grip on larger-diameter materials including stainless steel and alloy bar.

The XD42 runs on the Fanuc 0i-TF Plus controller, which supports Cs spindle control on both the main and sub spindles for compound turning and milling operations.

Yes. The XD42 ships in an NH (convertible) configuration that lets operators switch between guide-bush and non-guide-bush mode. Non-guide-bush mode reduces material waste on shorter workpieces and is well suited to parts where the length-to-diameter ratio does not require full guide-bush support.
