The Hanwha XD38II-R is the heavy-duty cutting variant in the Hanwha 38mm Swiss-type lathe family, introduced in 2019 and optimised specifically for demanding materials and complex milling operations. Its defining characteristic is an extended stroke envelope: Z1 stroke in guide-bush mode grows from 205mm (on the XD38II) to 320mm, and non-guide-bush Z1 grows from 80mm to 120mm. The cross and back axes also carry extended travel -- Y1, Z2, X2, and Y2 all gain additional stroke -- resulting in a larger overall machining envelope that can accommodate bigger tool assemblies and longer finished workpieces. The back tool unit is designed around large-material requirements. Tool spacing is set at 52mm between positions, wider than the standard layout, reducing interference when large-diameter tooling is in use. Eight back tool positions (ER16, 4 fixed + 4 driven) are standard, and a back tool cross unit (modular) is available as an option for secondary milling operations on the sub spindle side. The cross-drill unit runs on a 2.2 kW Fanuc or 2.13 kW Siemens motor -- described by Hanwha as best-in-class output for this machine class -- with five tools (ER20 x 2, ER16 x 3) in a gear-driven modular arrangement for fast, secure tool changes. Controller options are Fanuc 32i-B or Siemens 828D. The machine ships in NH (convertible guide bush / non-guide bush) configuration, allowing operators to switch modes without major re-setup. Chuck and guide bush specifications use TF48 collet chucks on main and sub spindles and a BRA42 guide bush -- the same proven configuration found on the XD38III -- making the XD38II-R directly comparable in clamping performance. AMT supplies and supports the XD38II-R for Canadian manufacturers.

Ideal For

  • Shops running challenging materials where a higher-power cross-drill motor matters
  • Productions requiring longer parts or larger tool clearances than a standard XD38II provides
  • Job shops standardised on Siemens 828D seeking a heavy-duty 38mm Swiss option
  • Operations that need both guide-bush and non-guide-bush flexibility with easy switching
  • Canadian precision machining operations supported by AMT with Hanwha application expertise
Key Features

XD38II-R Features

Standard features that set this machine apart in demanding manufacturing environments.

Precision & Performance

  • Best-in-class cross-drill motor (2.2 kW Fanuc / 2.13 kW Siemens) with gear-driven modular tooling for secure, repeatable tool changes
  • TF48 collet chucks on main and sub spindles with BRA42 guide bush -- the same high-clamping-force configuration as the XD38III

Machining Capability

  • Extended cross and back axes (Y1, Z2, X2, Y2) provide additional travel to accommodate larger tool assemblies and support upper-size tooling
  • Eight-position back tool unit (4 fixed + 4 driven, ER16) with 52mm tool spacing designed for large-material, heavy-cut applications
  • Compatible with various whirling units and other specialist option tooling for thread or spiral feature production

Built-In Extras

  • Extended Z1 stroke -- 320mm in guide-bush mode, up 57% from the XD38II's 205mm -- opens a wider machining envelope for longer or more complex workpieces
  • Convertible guide bush / non-guide bush (NH) allows flexible material feeding, including bar feeders, automation units, and robot interfaces

FAQ

XD38II-R Questions

Answers to common questions about the XD38II-R.

The XD38II-R is the reinforced, heavy-duty variant. Its Z1 stroke in guide-bush mode is 320mm -- compared to 205mm on the guide-bush XD38II -- and all cross and back axis travels are also extended. The back tool unit has 52mm spacing between tool positions to handle larger tooling, and the cross-drill motor is rated at a higher output. The chuck and guide bush specification also changes: the XD38II-R uses TF48 collet chucks and a BRA42 guide bush rather than the HW38 chucks on the base XD38II.

The XD38II-R is available with either Fanuc 32i-B or Siemens 828D. Both options support Cs spindle control on main and sub spindles. The Siemens version uses a higher-output 23 kW spindle motor.

The standard rated capacity is Ø38mm. An option to support Ø40mm is listed in the Hanwha brochure. Confirm availability with AMT for your specific application.
