XD38III
Sliding-Headstock Swiss Lathe

The Hanwha XD38III is the most recent generation of Hanwha's 38mm sliding-headstock Swiss lathe, launched in 2023 as a significant structural and thermal upgrade over the previous-generation 38mm platform. The central engineering focus was reducing thermal displacement: the XD38III achieves a 40% reduction in head-1 thermal displacement and a 55% reduction in head-2 thermal displacement compared to the previous generation, translating directly to tighter dimensional consistency over long production runs without constant recalibration. Structural rigidity received equal attention. The front tool post is 15 mm thicker than on the prior version, reducing deformation by 38%. The back tool post (Y2-axis) has been redesigned for heavy-duty work, cutting deformation by 70% versus the old model. The ER20 modular cross-drill unit was upgraded with larger bearings, improving surface roughness by 34%. The X2 ball screw was also optimised for better diameter and lead characteristics, complementing Hanwha's proprietary ITS (Innovative Thermal Solution) system built into the machine structure. The XD38III accepts bar stock up to Ø38mm (with Ø40mm available as an option) and runs in a convertible guide bush / non-guide bush (NH) configuration. Controller choice is either Fanuc 0i-TF Plus (built-in 5.5/7.5 kW spindle motor) or Siemens 828D (23 kW spindle motor), making the machine compatible with shops standardised on either platform. AMT supplies and supports the XD38III throughout Canada.

FAQ

XD38III Questions

Answers to common questions about the XD38III.

The XD38III is the third-generation redesign of Hanwha's 38mm Swiss platform and addresses thermal stability and structural rigidity directly. It reduces head-1 thermal displacement by 40% and head-2 thermal displacement by 55%, thickens the front tool post by 15mm to cut deformation by 38%, and rebuilds the back tool post to reduce its deformation by 70%. These changes translate to better dimensional consistency over long, unattended production runs.

Yes. The XD38III is available with either Fanuc 0i-TF Plus or Siemens 828D, making it one of the few machines in the Hanwha Swiss range to offer both controller platforms. The Siemens version uses a 23 kW spindle motor and a slightly larger machine footprint.

The XD38III uses a gear-modular cross-drill unit with six tools (four ER16 plus two ER20) at 6,000 rpm, and a back-tool unit carrying five tools as standard (three fixed, two driven) plus cross and turning positions. The modular layout keeps tool changes and maintenance straightforward.
