Sliding-Headstock Swiss Lathe

The Hanwha XE20/26 is a 5-axis sliding-headstock Swiss-type CNC lathe offered in two bar-capacity variants: Ø20 mm (XE20) and Ø26 mm (XE26). Both share the same machine platform and are controlled by the Hanwha Fanuc-i system, making the XE20/26 a versatile entry into Swiss turning for shops that machine small-to-medium diameter precision parts in stainless steel, alloy steel, brass, and aluminium. The high-speed main spindle — 10,000 rpm on the Ø20 mm variant and 8,000 rpm on the Ø26 mm — gives the XE20/26 the surface-speed capability to cut efficiently in non-ferrous and free-machining materials that dominate medical, electronic, and connector component work. The standard tooling configuration delivers 6 OD tools (□12 mm) for the Ø20 variant or 5 OD tools (□16 mm) for the Ø26 variant, 5 front tools (ER16M, Ø25), and 4 cross drill tools (ER16) at 6,000 rpm on a 1.0 kW motor. Back tooling consists of 4 positions (2 fixed + 2 driven, ER16) at 6,000 rpm. An optional off-centre drill unit adds 2 positions (ER16) on the sub spindle side, and the optional Cross Unit 6 expands the cross station to 6 positions with a mixed □16 and □11 holder arrangement (ER11M and ER16). A convertible guide bush (NH configuration) is available as an option, allowing the machine to switch between guide-bush and non-guide-bush mode depending on bar length and material requirements. The XE20/26 is positioned as a reliable, cost-effective Swiss turning solution: its 5-axis configuration handles the majority of sliding-headstock work without the tooling complexity or price premium of the XD series. At 2,500 kg and a footprint of 2,260 x 1,240 x 1,670 mm, it fits comfortably in typical Swiss turning cell layouts. With a power consumption of only 2.2 kVA rated (6.9 kVA rated maximum), the XE20/26 is an economical machine to run across multi-shift operations.

Ideal For

  • Job shops running high-mix, small-to-medium-diameter Swiss turning in the Ø20–26 mm range
  • Electronic and connector parts manufacturers requiring high spindle speeds for non-ferrous materials
  • Operations that want a cost-effective and reliable sliding-headstock platform without multi-path complexity
  • Shops upgrading from cam-operated automatic lathes to CNC Swiss turning
  • Facilities that value a convertible guide bush to reduce bar waste on premium materials
Key Features

XE20/26 Features

Standard features that set this machine apart in demanding manufacturing environments.

Precision & Performance

  • High main spindle speed (10,000 rpm at Ø20 mm; 8,000 rpm at Ø26 mm) is well suited to fast metal removal in brass, aluminium, and free-machining stainless for electronic and connector components.
  • Back tool unit (4 positions: 2 fixed + 2 driven, ER16) supports simultaneous main and sub spindle operations to shorten cycle time on two-ended parts.

Ease of Operation

  • Two bar-capacity variants — Ø20 mm and Ø26 mm — on a shared platform let shops standardise tooling and programming while covering a wide range of part diameters.
  • Compact machine footprint (2,260 x 1,240 x 1,670 mm) and low power draw (2.2 kVA running) keep floor space and energy costs in check for multi-machine installations.
  • Spline modular cross tooling (standard) and optional 3-face/counterface-driven tool units support flexible toolholder strategies without high dedicated-unit costs.

Built-In Extras

  • Convertible guide bush (NH option) allows switching between guide-bush and non-guide-bush modes without a dedicated machine variant, reducing bar remnant waste on short parts.
  • Standard cross drill (4 x ER16) plus optional Cross Unit 6 (6 positions) provides substantial live-tooling capacity for hex features, radial holes, and flat milling.

FAQ

XE20/26 Questions

Answers to common questions about the XE20/26.

The XE20 accepts bar stock up to Ø20 mm and runs the main spindle at 10,000 rpm, while the XE26 accepts stock up to Ø26 mm and runs the main spindle at 8,000 rpm. The Ø26 variant also carries a higher-power main spindle motor (2.2/5.5 kW vs. 2.2/3.7 kW) to handle the larger material cross-section. Both share the same machine footprint, controller, and base tooling configuration.

Yes. The optional NH (convertible guide bush) configuration allows the operator to switch between guide-bush and non-guide-bush mode on the same machine. Non-guide-bush mode reduces bar remnant, which is particularly valuable when running expensive materials such as titanium or medical-grade stainless.

Standard live tooling includes 4 cross drill positions (ER16) at 6,000 rpm and 2 driven back tool positions (ER16) at 6,000 rpm. An optional Cross Unit 6 expands the cross station to 6 positions (ER11M x 2 + ER16 x 4), and the optional Cross Unit 5 adds 3-face/counterface-driven tool capability for multi-face milling.
