XM20
Swiss-Type Lathe for Dental Parts

The Hanwha XM20 is a 7-axis Swiss-type automatic lathe released in 2024 and purpose-engineered for the exacting demands of dental part production. Where most sliding-headstock lathes are general-purpose, the XM20 starts from the dental use case and works outward: its structure is designed specifically to minimise thermal deformation, keeping dimensional accuracy stable across long production runs of titanium screws, abutments, and implant fixtures. It accepts bar stock up to Ø20 mm (with an option for Ø25 mm), and the Fanuc 32i-B Plus controller gives the machine the precision trajectory control that difficult biocompatible materials demand. The cross drilling and milling unit is the centrepiece of the XM20's tooling strategy. A high-performance cross motor pairs with the NC 32iB Plus to improve surface finish and extend tool life when cutting stainless steel, cobalt-chrome alloys, and titanium. A B-axis cross drill unit is available as an option, adding a 0° to +90° swivel angle that enables true angular drilling and taper work without a secondary setup. High-precision linear motion guides and a ballscrew specification applied to the B-axis further reduce taper-surface roughness, directly addressing the finish quality that dental implant components require. For back-face operations, the XM20 carries a Y2-axis back tool unit with a high-rigidity structure and a guide-pin tool-change system that reduces fixed-tool replacement time. The sub-spindle runs at 10,000 rpm on the same 2.2/3.7 kW motor family as the main spindle, providing the power needed to complete dental parts in a single cycle. A convertible guide bush (NH configuration) lets operators switch between guide-bush and non-guide-bush mode, reducing bar remnant waste on premium-priced titanium stock. Energy-saving technology and a large 208-litre oil tank keep operating costs manageable in a high-volume dental lab or contract machining environment.

Ideal For

  • Dental implant and prosthetics contract manufacturers
  • Medical device job shops running titanium and SUS316L bar stock
  • Shops requiring single-cycle complete machining of complex small-diameter dental parts
  • Operations upgrading from general Swiss lathes to a dedicated dental-optimised platform
  • Facilities where thermal stability across long production runs is critical to dimensional conformance
Key Features

XM20 Features

Standard features that set this machine apart in demanding manufacturing environments.

Precision & Performance

  • Thermal deformation is minimised through a special structure that includes a lighter tool post and a cooling jacket on the spindle, maintaining dimensional accuracy across extended dental part runs.
  • The Fanuc 32i-B Plus controller and high-performance cross motor work together to improve surface roughness and extend tool life when cutting difficult biocompatible materials such as titanium and stainless steel.
  • B-axis cross drill unit (optional) provides a 0° to +90° swivel angle, enabling angular hole features and taper drilling in a single setup without repositioning the part.
  • High-precision linear motion guides and ballscrew specification on the B-axis reduce surface roughness on taper-machined features, critical for implant fit-up accuracy.

Built-In Extras

  • A large 208-litre oil tank and energy-saving technology lower operating cost over continuous dental production shifts.
  • Guide-pin back-tool replacement reduces changeover time on the Y2 back tool unit, supporting efficient small-batch dental part schedules.
  • Convertible guide bush (NH) lets operators switch between guide-bush and non-guide-bush mode, reducing waste on expensive titanium bar stock.

FAQ

XM20 Questions

Answers to common questions about the XM20.

Yes. The XM20 was purpose-built for dental components: it machines titanium, SUS316L, and other biocompatible materials and is designed with a structure that minimises thermal deformation to maintain the tight tolerances that dental implant parts require. The standard configuration already handles screws, temporary abutments, angle abutments, and multi-angle abutments in a single cycle.

The optional B-axis automatic cross drill unit (XM20 Y2+B configuration) adds a swivel range of 0° to +90°, allowing the machine to drill angular holes and machine taper features without removing the part from the spindle. High-precision linear motion guides on the B-axis also improve surface roughness on taper-machined surfaces, which is important for implant-fit accuracy.

The XM20 runs on a Fanuc 32i-B Plus controller. This is a step above the standard Fanuc 32iB found on many Swiss lathes, and Hanwha specifies it specifically because its trajectory-control capability supports both the high-speed cross motor and the B-axis interpolation needed for precise dental component geometry.
