The Hanwha XP12/16S is a 4-axis CNC automatic lathe built for small-diameter precision turning. Available in two bar-capacity variants -- XP12S (Ø12 mm) and XP16S (Ø16 mm) -- it targets the high-speed, high-volume end of the automatic lathe spectrum where cycle times are short, batch sizes are large, and the parts are small: fasteners, connectors, electronic hardware, and precision pins in brass, aluminium, and free-machining stainless. The Hanwha Fanuc-i controller brings full CNC programmability to a class of work that has historically been handled by cam-operated automatic lathes, with the operational benefits that entails: repeatable setups, faster changeovers, and the ability to hold tighter tolerances across long production runs. The main spindle runs at 12,000 rpm -- higher than any other model in the Hanwha XP range -- on a 2.2/5.5 kW motor, reflecting the priority placed on surface-speed capability for small-diameter non-ferrous and free-machining materials. The tooling layout follows the XP series pattern: 6 OD tools (□12 mm), 3 front tools (ER11, Ø20), and a standard 3-position cross drill (ER11 x 2 + ER16 x 1) at 6,000 rpm on a 0.5 kW motor. The sub spindle runs at 8,000 rpm on a 0.55/1.1 kW motor -- appropriately sized for back-face work on small-diameter parts. The Z1 stroke is 140 mm across both variants, and the machine footprint of 1,650 x 1,090 x 1,640 mm is the smallest in the Hanwha XP range. An optional Cross Unit 4 (OD 5 x □12, Cross 4 x [ER16 x 1 + ER11 x 3], Front 3 x ER11) expands the cross and front tooling positions for more complex cross-milling work. A gear-hobbing unit from Pibomulti is available as an option, with a ±2° angle range, making the XP12/16S capable of producing hobbed gear features on small-diameter components without a secondary operation. The XP12/16S is the lightest machine in the Hanwha lineup at 1,800 kg, and its power consumption of 1.8 kVA running (rated 3.9 kVA) means it is the least demanding on shop electrical infrastructure.

Ideal For

  • High-volume production of small-diameter turned parts in brass, aluminium, and free-machining stainless
  • Shops transitioning from cam-operated single-spindle automatics to CNC precision production at low capital cost
  • Operations needing the smallest possible machine footprint for Swiss-type turning under Ø16 mm
  • Facilities where electrical capacity limits new machine additions
  • Job shops producing gear-featured small parts who want to eliminate secondary hobbing operations
Key Features

XP12/16S Features

Standard features that set this machine apart in demanding manufacturing environments.

Precision & Performance

  • The highest main spindle speed in the XP range at 12,000 rpm enables efficient high-surface-speed cutting in brass, aluminium, and free-machining stainless for small-diameter parts.
  • Optional gear-hobbing unit (Pibomulti, ±2° angle) enables hobbed gear and spline features on small-diameter parts without a secondary operation -- a significant productivity advantage for gear-featured precision hardware.

Ease of Operation

  • Hanwha Fanuc-i control provides full G-code programmability with quick changeovers, directly addressing the setup-time disadvantages of the cam-operated automatic lathes it is designed to replace.
  • Low power demand (1.8 kVA running, 3.9 kVA rated) and small footprint make the XP12/16S cost-effective for multi-machine installations where floor space and electrical capacity are constrained.

Machining Capability

  • Standard 3-position cross drill (ER11 x 2 + ER16 x 1) handles radial features, flat milling, and cross-hole drilling in a single cycle.
  • Optional Cross Unit 4 expands tooling positions to 5 OD + 4 cross + 3 front, increasing the machine's ability to handle more complex small-diameter turned components.

Built-In Extras

  • Compact machine footprint (1,650 x 1,090 x 1,640 mm) and low weight (1,800 kg) make the XP12/16S one of the easiest Hanwha machines to integrate into existing cell layouts or to add to a growing shop floor.

FAQ

XP12/16S Questions

Answers to common questions about the XP12/16S.

The XP12S handles bar stock up to Ø12 mm and the XP16S handles bar stock up to Ø16 mm. Both share the same machine, controller, and tooling layout, with different collet and guide bush sets (TF16/SD125R for the XP12S; TF22/TD20R for the XP16S).

Yes, with the optional gear-hobbing unit from Pibomulti. The unit mounts in the cross position and operates over a ±2° angle range, allowing hobbed gear and spline features to be produced on small-diameter parts in the same cycle as the turned features.

The XP12/16S is the smaller variant in the XP family, designed for bar diameters up to Ø16 mm versus the XP20/26/32S's range up to Ø32 mm. The XP12/16S runs at a higher main spindle speed (12,000 rpm vs. 8,000 rpm), has a smaller footprint, lighter weight, and lower power draw, and includes a gear-hobbing option that is not listed for the XP20/26/32S. Both use the Hanwha Fanuc-i controller and share the same 4-axis architecture.
